Side Quests
-
Biked from coast to coast of the United States (Yorktown, Virginia -> Astoria, Oregon) to support affordable housing. This 3-month journey spurred my interest in policy and economics. The daily 100-km rides also made me appreciate my now desk job.
-
Volunteered as a bike mechanic during college, doing free repairs for low-income clients, no questions asked. I enjoyed working with my hands, hanging out at the shop and contributing to my local community. The elbow grease was also a nice contrast to my theoretical math & statistics studies.
-
Interned one summer for the US Forest Service in New Mexico, waking up before dawn to conduct surveys for sensitive wildlife species and spending long days doing manual trailwork. I learned a lot about wildlife and ecology, and I continue to be a "nature girl" to this day.
-
Have read 250+ books and counting, mostly world literature and old-time adventure writers. Jack Kerouac will always be my favorite.
-
Have dabbled in all outdoors sports imaginable: mountain biking, skiing, surfing, mountaineering, backpacking, canyoneering, yoga, kayaking, caving, road biking and hiking.
